At about 3:30, Mica fell off his perch and started regurgitating red/orange stuff and struggling to breathe. I got him to the vet ASAP, but they were unable to do anything further without an avian vet or better equipment. They kept him on oxygen for a few hours to help him breathe and sent me home with antibiotics for him.
When I got home, I had to take his favorite sleeping perch out of the cage to clean where he had been sick. Behind it, I found he has been chewing the paint off the bars of his cage. Combined with everything else, I suspect this is metal poisoning of some sort from the paint. This cage is an old cage, and came with him when I rescued him. I’m kicking myself for not noticing sooner.
That means I need to get him a new cage ASAP so he can be safe. For now I’ve covered the area as best as possible to restrict his access to it and I’m watching him, but he might find a new spot to chew.
On top of that, I would like to get him to an avian specialist Monday for further treatment. No place around here is open until then. For now he is eating, drinking, and moving about his cage normally, though he is still obviously having a hard time breathing it’s not as bad as it was. The vet said if he takes an extreme turn for the worst, it may be possible to get an avian vet to come in, though there is a huge fee for it.
I am making galaxy bats available for purchase in my shop. You can customize their fabric type, color, whether or not they get a gem, and the color of the galaxy print. If you want, you can really choose any color for the body as long as you are willing to have it be fleece and possibly not anti-pill.
The downside is that it will 2 weeks at the earliest to make these bats, possibly 3 or more if anything happens that delays me. And I am restricting Payment to Paypal so I can purchase a cage immediately online and pick it up in store.
I’m also making patterns only $5 from Craftsy (since they don’t charge a fee for listing or a % of sale fee like Etsy does). So now is a good time to get a pattern if you’ve been eyeing them.
This should be enough to cover the cost of a new, high quality cage, and hopefully the initial vet costs. I will be in a much better place after ShutCon next weekend for the rest of the vet bills. I just need the cage ASAP.
