What did we do to deserve Bill Nye
Conservatives are fucking furious about him for this. Let ‘em whine.
Okay then. Show me the science. Show me the non disputable truth thus is true.
There… is no science that supports that gender is on a spectrum.
The nearest science that comes to sex being on a spectrum is the grey areas that incorporate intersex conditions, which are like so:
But even so, that doesn’t mean that biological sex is a spectrum. It means that there’s male and female, and when it comes to intersex conditions, there are difficulties in drawing a perfect boundary between male and intersex, and female and intersex. The grey is clearly intersex. The not-quite-black? The not-quite-white? The tiny shades in between? That’s what often causes the confusion. It’s up to the individual person who is intersex to choose for themselves as to whether they’re male or female. There are plenty who are almost-black or almost-white that live entire lives and die thinking that they’re entirely-black and entirely-white.
Now, I know there are people currently thinking, “But Mags, he said “gender” not “sex,” so what does any of that have to do with what’s been said above?” Well, I’ll explain.
Science can’t measure gender, not in the way that Nye is pretending that it does. What he’s heavily implying is that there is a concrete, scientific basis to support every tiny made-up gender that there is. He’s actually mixing up sex and gender very clumsily, since he talks about “what makes someone male or female” is him talking about the fact that intersex people exist and that intersex conditions lie on a spectrum, and then he jumps into stating that a person’s gender identity may change over time.
Nye saying that gives others a reason to think that “demigenders” and the like are scientifically sound, or that being intersex is a “third gender” when neither of those things are true.
As far as his “sexuality is a spectrum” is concerned, that isn’t exactly true, either.
Yes, sexuality is amazingly complicated, but that isn’t because, for example, bisexual people are on a “spectrum.” That implies that there are different degrees of sexuality, when the truth is that there are distinct boxes for sexuality (heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual and asexual) and within those categories, there are a near-infinite combination of personal preferences.
Let’s take heterosexuality. Heterosexuality isn’t on a spectrum. John only liking larger brunettes that are outdoorsy doesn’t make him any different from Shlomo only liking petite blondes. They’re both heterosexual, they just have different preferences, and Ahmed that doesn’t have any preference aside from a connection to any woman doesn’t make him more or less heterosexual than Tyrone who only goes for a very specific type of woman.
Plus, there are plenty of people that, early on in life, think that they’re one sexuality and then grow to realise that they were always a different sexuality. It’s a common story, a gay man or lesbian woman being in heterosexual relationships for years, hiding who they were for a multitude of reasons, and then eventually coming out and admitting that they were always gay/lesbian. Or older people who know that they’re bisexual dropping the label to say that they’re hetero/homosexual depending on the partner they end up with because keeping the bisexual label is too difficult thanks to biphobia that’s rampant that says that they’ll cheat, or otherwise make them feel shame for the label. A sexuality is just a sexuality. I genuinely think that there are more bisexuals out there with heavy preferences one way or another that explains why so many can “experiment,” enjoy themselves and then retain another label, but that’s a discussion for another time.
I’m sorry, but it was completely wrong for Nye to state that either is “science.” All that he’s done is claim that both things are scientific and not explain why to push an agenda.
Science is neither kind nor cruel, it just is. And from this set of images alone, Nye appears to be deliberately lying.
